Gordon Johnson
Co-Founder and Head Coach of ATSA

Gordon started teaching lessons in 1968 and started coaching in 1973. He has been coaching off and on during the last 39+ years in various capacities, from assistant to head coach. He graduated from California State University, Sacramento with a degree in "Aquatics" - a degree specially designed to coach aquatic sports and run aquatic complexes and programs.

Gordon has coached year 'round, high school and summer rec teams including Hueneme Swim Association, Vallejo Aquatic Club, Hogan High School, Ukiah Dolphins, Ukiah High School, Lake County Channel Cats, Bishop Estates and assisted with the "Age Group Elite" squad for the world-class Terrapins Fall Program. His Vallejo team won many summer and winter league championships, while his Hogan High School boys' team won the league championships twice. He has worked with various levels of swimmers from novice to "National Recordable Time" swimmers.

Gordon's focus is on up-to-date "stroke technique" (not laps) tailored drills and dry-land exercises which has proven itself successful over and over.

In May 2003, along with his wife Debbie, Gordon started "Aquatic Times" web magazine and Aquatic Times Swim Academy where trains ATSA coaches and teaches. He has given coaching clinics to other rec teams and really enjoys working with the swimmers.

"I really enjoy coaching swimmers. I love motivating swimmers to improve their stroke technique. It's very exciting to see the look on their faces when they feel the accomplishment of "getting it"." ---Gordon

The clinics are well organized. The time is used wisely with technique instructions rather than just swimming laps. Gordon and Debbie are the most experienced instructors that we have seen. Justin and his cousin had a great time and can't wait until the spring clinics!
